Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection includes research, writing drafts, and working files of Roger V. Dingman, on a number of projects and topics. Paper material is loosely arranged into four series:

a) Navy Japanese Language School - Series contains research material related to Dingman's book, Deciphering The Rising Sun (2009), on US Navy Japanese language interpreters in WWII. Includes correspondence with graduates of CU Boulder Navy Japanese Language School.

b) Crisis in Command - Series contains research and working files on Robert Dingman's work, "Crisis in Command: Truman, McArthur, and the Conduct of the Korean War, 1950."

c) Ghost of War - Series contains research and working material related to Dingman's Ghost of War: the Sinking of the Awa Maru and Japanese-American Relations, 1945-1995 (1997).

d) Unsorted papers and working files - This series contains articles, correspondence, writing, and other materials on diverse topics related to Japan, the Korean War, Cold War, and the US Navy Japanese Language school. Much of this series was acquired in a 2014 accural and has not been processed into individual topics. See the scope/content note of each box for a brief inventory.

Sound recordings and moving image material from the above series are described in Series 1 and reflect similar sub-series. Recordings in this collection include interviews with officers from the US Navy Japanese Language School at CU Boulder, and additional recordings of conference proceedings, broadcast programs, and interviews relating to the Japanese language, the Pacific theater, and Dingman's other writing and research, including Ghost of War (1997), on the 1945 sinking of Japanese cargo ship Awa maru by US submarine Queenfish.
