Biographical Note
James Henry Stebbings was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1937. He was married in 1989. From 1955 to 1966, he attended St. Louis University where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Geography in 1960. In 1969, Stebbings received his Doctorate of Science in epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University, School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. James Stebbings’ professional employment included the following. He began his career in 1963 as a Research Assistant in Epidemiology at the University of Buffalo, New York. In 1967, he became the Project Director of a Respiratory Disease Study at the Medical and Health Research Association of New York City until 1970. Dr. Stebbings was an Assistant Professor from 1970 to 1973 in the Division of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health in the University of Minnesota. In 1974, he became an Epidemiologist in the Air Pollutants Branch at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in North Carolina until 1977. He was a Group Leader in Epidemiology Group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico from 1977 to 1979. He held a tenured Associate Professor position in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota from 1980 to 1981. He was the Group Leader of the Epidemiology Group from 1981 to 1990 and also the Section Head (Acting) of the Environmental Health Section from 1987 to 1990 of the Radiological and Environmental Research Division and Biological and Medical Research Division in the Argonne National Laboratory (Operated by the University of Chicago). In 1992, Dr. Stebbings became the Senior Research Epidemiologist of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations, and Field Studies, in the Energy-Related Health Research Branch in Cincinnati, Ohio until 1993. From 1990 to 1992 and 1994 to 2003, he was the Principal Associate of Midwest Epidemiology Associates in Naperville, Illinois. His professional appointments inlcuded five positions. Dr. Stebbings was an Instructor in Epidemiology at Columbia University from 1969 to 1970 and an Assistant in Epidemiology from 1968 to 1969. He was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Medicine at New York University from 1968 to 1970. In 1975, he became an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University North Carolina until 1977. From 1977 to 1979 he was a Clinical Associate in the Department of Family, Community and Emergency Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico. In 1991, Dr. Stebbings became an Adjunct Professor and was an Adjunct Associate Professor from 1982 to 1992 in the Division of Epidemiology and Biometry, School of Public Health at the University of Chicago. James Stebbings produced considerable scholarly and medical articles with numerous journals and publications, but frequently with journals such as; Environmental Research, American Journal of Epidemiology, and Health Physics. His research in the health effects of radium, plutonium, and other radionuclides was of particular importance. Dr. Stebbings held a membership with the Health Physics Society.
