Historical Note
The President’s Office at University of Colorado evolved continuously since the establishment of University of Colorado in 1876. The responsibilities of President of University of Colorado have also changed and developed throughout its history. When Amendment 4 to the Colorado State Constitution was passed in 1972, the University was allowed to create a multi-campus administration at Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver, and the Health Science Center, each with its own chancellor. The Board of Regents divided the administration of the University between Central Administration (now System Administration) and the campus chancellors’ offices. Most academic, student affairs, faculty affairs and budgetary functions were passed to campus chancellors and the former vice presidential offices for those functions were eliminated. Chief Officer of each campus was designated as chancellor. Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Affairs first appeared in the Boulder Campus student directories in 1974. Theo Volsky Jr. was listed as Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Affairs. In 1975/76, Joanne Arnold joined the office of Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Affairs as Acting Associate Vice Chancellor. In 1977/78, Joanne Arnold was listed as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In 1980/81, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Affairs was changed into Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculties under Milton E. Lipetz, Vice Chancellor.
