Biographical / Historical

Since 1921, campus publicity services at the University of Colorado Boulder-including publications, photography, news, and media-were offered under a variety of department and office titles.

Variations are believed to have included: the Department of Publications (1921, headed by Ralph L. Crosman), the Department of Publicity (1922-1926), the Department of Publications (1926-1944), Office of Public Information (1949-1971, headed by John Bartram from 1949-1957, including the Bureau of Publications from 1958-1971), Information Services (1971), Publication and Creative Services (1972-1978), Public Information Office (1978-1984, merging with News Services in 1983), News Media Relations (1984-1986), Public Relations (1986-1994), Office of Public Affairs (1994-1998, directed by Pauline Hale), Institutional Relations (1998-2000, led by Executive Director Bobbi Barrow), and University Communications (2000-, with Pauline Hale named as Executive Director in 2003 and Michael Warden named as Vice Chancellor for University Communications in 2007).

The University PhotoLab (or "Photographic Services") was included in all of these department changes. It was located in the Macky building until the 1980s, when it moved to Hallet, then to East Campus in Boulder. In its numerous re-namings and re-organizations, the campus publicity office may also have been divided into separate named sections according to media function, including Publication Services, the CU News Bureau, Strategic Media Relations, and CU Media and News Services.
