Biographical / Historical
The Women’s Studies Program at CU Boulder has the distinction of being the oldest program of its kind in the state of Colorado, and one of the oldest in the nation. Established in 1974 after student and founding committee member Betsy Graef collected 3,000 signatures in five days to interest in such a program. The process to officially make the program part of the CU Boulder curriculum then began. Noteworthy faculty names associated with the beginning of the program include: Doris Havice, Religious Studies; Joyce Frost, Communication; Suzanne Foster, Fine Arts; Gary Metz, Fine Arts; Tom Mayer, sociology; Ruth Cline, Education; and Dennis Eckart, Political Science. In the fall of 1974 Carol Pearson was named the first director of the Women’s Studies Program. From 1974 to 1983 the program was independently structured. This can cause an issue with conferring degrees. In 1983 the major was able to be awarded through under the auspices of the American Studies Program. This was unfortunate because it did not allow the program to be independent and achieve its goals. In 1998 the program was finally awarded its own independent major. And in keeping with those goals, the program changed its name in 2006 to Women and Gender Studies Program to better indicate the subject matter and ideals of the program.
