Historical Note

The School of Architecture at the University of Colorado grew out of the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering in the College of Engineering. The School of Architecture became a college in July 1, 1962. Devon Carlson was appointed Dean of the new school.

Devon McElvin Carlson (December 1, 1917- ) was born in Topeka, Kansas, and received Architecture and Architectural Engineering degrees from the University of Colorado in 1947 and Columbia University in 1949. He joined the faculty of the University of Colorado in 1943, serving as Acting Head, Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering from 1959 until May 1962. At that time he became Dean of the School of Architecture until 1970 and then Dean of the College of Environmental Design from 1970-1971, before retiring in 1981.

The School of Architecture's mission was to allow more range and applicability to offerings in the architectural field than those allowed within architectural engineering.
