Scope and Contents

This is a collection of architectural photographs of the buildings, architectural models, and artists’ sketches done by a number of architects including material from the 1950s and 1960s though there are historical photographs dating back to the 1930s. Virtually all the photographs are of Colorado; primarily being churches, schools, government buildings, private residences, businesses, and other buildings. Also included are photographs of the architectural models and sketches for the Denver Convention Center Competition and the Denver General Hospital Competition.

Biographical Note

Devon McElvin Carlson (December 1, 1917 - April 10, 2016) was born in Topeka, Kansas, and received Architecture and Architectural Engineering degrees from the University of Colorado in 1947 and Columbia University in 1949. He joined the faculty of the University of Colorado in 1943, serving as Acting Head, Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering from 1959 until may 1962. At that time he became Dean, School of Architecture until 1970 and then Dean of the College of Environmental Design 1970-71 before retiring in 1981.

Abstract

Devon M. Carlson joined the CU Faculty in 1943. He was in Architecture and Head then later Dean of the School of Architecture from 1959-1971, retiring in 1981. This collection is architectural photographs, architectural models, and sketches of buildings by different architects.

Arrangement

Binders which contained documents and photographs of architectural projects were taken apart due to acidic conditions and placed into separate folders with contents in their original order. Folders were then separated by architect, project or competition and arranged chronologically.
