Scope and Contents

The Fred Case Collection contains the minutes, memorandum and correspondence of the Phreatophyte Subcommittee from the years 1951 to 1970, as well as Bound Volumes of the minutes from 1951 to 1966. This collection also contains various reports created by the Phreatophyte Subcommittee with topics including phreatophytes and phreatophyte control. Miscellaneous phreatophyte publications, brochures, newspaper clippings and studies are also included in this collection. Documents from the meetings of the phreatophyte parent committee which was the Pacific Southwest Inter-Agency Committee for the years 1962-1964 are also included. Also found in this collection are departmental reports and bound reports of the committee.

Biographical Note

This collection contains documents pertaining to the Phreatophyte Subcommittee which was established by the Pacific Southwest Inter-Agency Technical Committee for the purpose of dealing with the phreatophyte problem along the Colorado River. The membership of the committee consisted of representatives from the Geologic Survey, the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior, the Soil Conservation Service, the Forest Service, the Bureau of Plant Industry, the Department of Agriculture, the South Pacific Division, the Corps of Engineers of the US Army, and representatives from the Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs were also later appointed to the committee.

The phreatophyte subcommittee worked on phreatophyte control methods, experimental spraying with chemicals, and costs at various refuges by the Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as phreatophyte control and maintenance methods of the United States and Mexican Sections of the International Boundary and Water Commission. The subcommittee also sponsored a symposium on phreatophytes and provided other organizations all across the United States with findings from the reports and studies of the Phreatophyte Subcommittee.

Fred Case was a member of the Phreatophyte Subcommittee representing the Soil Conservation Service and was from Denver, Colorado.

These documents include meeting minutes, memorandum, correspondence, as well as research reports, both bound and printed concerning Phreatophytes and the work of the Phreatophyte Subcommittee. Also contains publications concerning soil conservation and recreation in the West.
