In 1866, Burgess and his uncles left Illinois and traveled on the Bozeman Trial to the Montana Territory. Philip George Burchill (1921–2010) was a graduate of the US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School at the University of Colorado and served at an intelligence officer in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. The collection includes phonefiche for urban areas listing 70,000 telephone customers located in seven mountain states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Dissemination of telephone book contents in a computer-output microform format began in the early 1970's.
